• Breed & Lifestyle: Match energy, size, and temperament to your routine. Brachycephalic breeds (French bulldogs, British Bulldogs, Pugs, Boxers, etc.) have a number of health issues. They are prone to over heating and need to be kept indoors in temperatures above 25°C and in air conditioning in temperatures above 30°C. Many require surgery to help them breath, are prone to spinal problems, skin and eye conditions, and are at higher risk of pneumonia than other breeds. They are not low maintenance. 

• Space & Fencing: Ensure secure yards and safe play areas.

• Breeder Questions: Confirm vaccinations, worming, microchipping, and health checks. Ask to meet the parents. Inquire about genetic screening, hip & elbow scoring (for large breeds), and any hereditary traits like anxiety. Discuss diet, whether it’s raw or home-prepared. Ask about litter size, as only puppies often show different behaviours (nipping, sociability, aggression) compared to those raised with siblings.

• Registration: Microchip and council registration are required for all dogs.

• Enrichment: working breeds (Kelpies, Border Collies, German Shepherds, Pointers, Labradors etc.) and Terriers have a high requirement for adequate exercise and environmental enrichment to prevent destructive behaviours, barking, escaping, etc. Can you commit to providing activities to keep their big brains occupied while you are away from home?
  
  
• Coat Maintenance: Double coated dogs, such as Siberian Huskys, Malamutes, Elkhounds etc. require a lot of coat maintenance and air conditioning on hot days.

Ask your vet whether the breed you are considering purchasing has any breed specific diseases you might need to know about.
