At Broadford Vet Clinic, we are fully equipped with an advanced ultrasound scanner to assist in evaluating your pet’s health. Our experienced veterinarians conduct a thorough physical examination and discuss your pet’s case to determine whether an ultrasound is necessary. Ultrasound imaging is particularly valuable for diagnosing conditions involving soft tissues, such as those in the abdomen or the heart.
What is an Ultrasound Scan?
An ultrasound scan is a painless, non-invasive procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves—inaudible to humans—to create images of internal body structures. When sound waves are directed into the body, some are absorbed by tissues while others bounce back. These returning waves are measured by the ultrasound machine and converted into detailed images, which can be printed or recorded. Proper use and interpretation of ultrasound images require extensive training, which our veterinarians have.
Ultrasound is most effective for examining soft or fluid-filled organs, including the liver, kidneys, bladder, and heart. It is less effective for bones or air-filled organs such as the lungs.
What to Expect During your Pet’s Ultrasound:
- Most pets are admitted for the day for their ultrasound, and should arrive unfed in case sedation is needed for accurate imaging.
- The scan area is shaved, gel is applied, and a transducer is used; the procedure is painless, though slight pressure or sedation may be required for comfort.
- After the scan, our veterinarians will review the images with you and explain the diagnosis and treatment plan for your pet.
